Wiki culture is that contributers create pages for themselves.

This comment was made on a page named /wiki/glandmaster, which I have marked for deletion. Apart from the fact I dont want a user page thank you I feel that making a subpage under /wiki/user/yourname is a better way to manage personal pages.

''I don't think the URL is all that important. But having a presence is. I think.''

It would help if you would provide a source for this idea that we must have a user page - I cannot find any evidence to support your claim. Just because we may link to other sites like c2 or Meatball to take advantage of the work they have done on wiki communities its worth noting that their culture is just that - theirs.

''Ok: "Traditionally, wiki users create a page for themselves." Linking to profile is one way to do it ... more contrained, more closed off, less transactive, is all.''

Its up to us to come together to make our own culture not mimic others who may well have different goals. ~ Glandmaster

''Being different for the sake of being different seems sorta reactive, no?
And BTW the --~~~~ is just a handy way of tagging contributions ... that would result in time/date plus UserName, e.g. --10:16MST 24DEC06 Cho''

''p.s. I just discovered "Pads" ... very much like a Wiki userpage. That, I think, responds to the basic need I was drawing attention to with my comment. So as things are we have Profiles and Pads.''

Moving to the topic of user pages in general I have a few ideas.

First my personal view is to have our names link to our forum profile page, I assume that the wiki could not easily replicate the functionality they provide. This would remove the need for user pages here and as users have to log into the forum anyway should not inconvenience the users. Either way it doesnt affect anon users by definition.

Secondly while I dont want to argue against user pages I do think they should all be under /wiki/user/username if people do want to use them. I think this is important to make it clear to readers what is meant as content and what isnt.

Thirdly I wonder if it is possible to have a command similar to local wiki links that could automatically link to our forum profile page? I ask because I do like the idea of signing our contributions, something the wiki user pages make very easy. ~ Glandmaster

    ----
First: Linking to forum profiles would solve a lot of these problems, but profiles don't even come close to the expressive power of wiki. Another option involves creating an entirely seperate wiki for personal pages.

Secondly: This is important for many technical reasons. Once we decide how it will happen then personal wiki pages can be both removed from the usual wiki updates in HTML and RSS--and--highlighted in their own right. For example the front page menu might look like this:

    :'''Recent wiki changes''' · ~~site--forum--[wiki]~~,,
    :~~[all]--wiki : users--media--meme--news--quotes--etc~~,,

Thirdly: You can now use the InterWiki prefix "Profile:" before your username to link your forum profile. Suggest new shortcuts to this or other websites on InterWiki_Talk. When our [Local:Help/Macros Macros] like <no>--Glandmaster ~~2007-01-29 ^14:04^~~</no> are finally fixed we'll add another (such as <no>[Profile:Glandmaster]</no>) to link your forum profile instead.--~~Profile:dimitri, @NOW@~~

By the way my sig consists of the following markup (bad advice, see below):

    : <tt><no>--~~Profile:dimitri, @NOW@~~</no></tt>

    ,,

: 1 I meant things like private messaging and the pal system, I agree the wiki allows the most freedom. You mention a separate user wiki but what is [http://deoxy.org/forum/wiki.pl?Cat=&u=Glandmaster this]?

: 2 I like the suggested menu and the idea of being able to choose the rss feeds I want.

: 3 Probably me but the now command seems to display the current time not the time you wrote the comment. This works fine though: Profile:Glandmaster ;)

::1. The forum wiki is basically a pad that your pals can edit.
::3. You are correct, it should be 2007-01-29 ^14:04^ (which is also broken).
